Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! Those precious first hours after welcoming a new baby into the world are a blur of awe, tenderness, and pure love. A Fresh 48 session is designed to capture all the unscripted, beautiful "firsts" in the hospital or birth center—from tiny toes and squishy newborn details to your family meeting your newest addition for the very first time.

Because those hours postpartum are meant for rest and bonding, I want this session to feel completely effortless for you. Here is everything you need to know to prepare for your Fresh 48 session!

Fun fact: I am very comfortable in the hospital setting. I have been a physical therapist working inpatient at South Shore Hospital for 11 years and I have had two of my own children. Maneuvering tight hospital rooms, adjusting hospital beds and navigating the post-partum experience are second nature to me.

Choosing Your Session Type

To make sure we capture every moment that matters most to your growing family, I offer three tailored Fresh 48 options:

  • The Classic (30 Minutes)
  • Best for: First babies or families keeping things intimate.
  • What to expect: We’ll focus on the quiet, cozy moments between you, your partner, and your new baby. We’ll capture baby’s tiny details (fingers, toes, hospital bracelets) along with beautiful, relaxed portraits of you holding your little one.
  • The Extended (45 Minutes)
  • Best for: Sibling introductions!
  • What to expect: We start off with you, your partner, and your newborn. Then, we’ll time the second half of the session for when big brother or sister arrives! I’ll capture the sweet, unscripted moment they walk through the door, meet their new best friend for the first time, and take your very first photos as a family of four (or more!).
  • The Extended (60 Minutes)
  • Best for: Sibling and grandparent introductions.
  • What to expect: If you want to capture the emotion of grandparents meeting their newest grandchild alongside sibling reactions, this option gives us all the time we need. It allows for a relaxed pace where everyone gets a moment to cuddle the baby without feeling rushed.

How to Prep!

What to Wear: Soft, Comfy & Coordinated

Hospital rooms are intimate, so keeping your wardrobe light, comfy, and neutral keeps the focus right where it belongs: on the emotion and connection. You don’t need to be fancy—a simple, coordinated look instantly feels polished! Hospital rooms can be low on light. Keeping your outfits light and neutral colored will help your photos have the light and airy vibe that fits my portfolio.

For Mom:

Your body has just done something incredible, so comfort is priority number one.

  • Upscale PJs: A new, neutral pajama set feels special while keeping you comfortable. (Lake Pajamas is a personal favorite for soft, beautiful sets!).
  • A Cozy Robe: A mid-to-full-length robe provides great coverage, easy access for feeding, and a soft, flattering layer over a nursing tank.
  • Flowy Dress: If you prefer a dress, opt for a soft, breathable, flowy midi or maxi dress in a neutral tone (cream, soft gray, oat, or subtle muted colors).
  • Don't forget your feet: Hospital socks for mom are not the vibe 😅 For both my kids, I grabbed a cheap pair of slipper from target to wear while in the hospital that I could throw away when I was done. I ended up having to wear them home from my first son because my swollen feet did't fit in my sneakers.
  • Tips: Your temperature regulation will like be all over the place so don't dress too warm that you end up glistening

For Partners:

  • Keep it simple and cozy! A soft crewneck tee, henley, or a casual button-down shirt paired with dark jeans or comfortable joggers works best. Don't forget clean shoes, slippers or some neutral socks.
  • Coordinate with Mom’s tones—avoid bright neon colors, bold logos, or heavy graphics.
  • Make sure your partner has an outfit packed 😉

For Older Siblings:

  • Set outfits aside early: Before you head to the hospital, pack and lay out a complete outfit—including shoes and socks—for whoever is bringing your older kids to the hospital (grandparents, family members, or a babysitter). This ensures no pieces are missed in the excitement of the day!
  • Choose comfortable, soft clothes in soft neutrals or muted tones that complement your family’s color palette.

What Accessories to Pack

I often get asked what your should pack for the new baby! While hospital baby blankets and striped hats have their own nostalgic charm that I love to include, bringing a few personal items helps make your photos feel uniquely yours. These are just some suggestions and don't need to be included if its not your vibe! Pack these together in a small bag inside your hospital tote so they’re easy to grab:

  • A Special Swaddle or Blanket: A soft, neutral muslin or stretch swaddle brings a homey feel to hospital bassinet shots.
  • A Name Placard or Announcement Sign: Wooden rounds, acrylic signs, or embroidered banners with baby’s name are perfect for detail shots.
  • A Cute Stuffed Animal or Lovey: A tiny teddy or heirloom lovey adds a sweet touch and helps show just how small baby is right now!

Tips for a Relaxed Session

  • Tell your Nurse: Let your nurse know when I will be coming in for a session to minimize interruptions. It is also helpful to think about whether you will want a little pain medication before hand to ensure your are comfortable throughout!
  • Tidy the Room Lightly: Don't stress about cleaning—I will handle moving lunch trays or medical equipment out of the frame! If you have a moment before I arrive, simply tuck away open suitcases or food wrappers.
  • Maximize Natural Light: Turn off all overhead hospital lights and open the window blinds. Hospital lighting can create harsh color casts, so natural window light is our best friend!
  • Feed Baby Right Before: If possible, try to feed baby about 15–20 minutes before our start time so they are full, content, and sleepy. If they wake up or need to nurse during the session, don't worry at all—feeding breaks make for beautiful, real-life photos, too.
